Blackberry Mojitoes {Summer Mocktail} | Recently, I created my own version of a delicious blackberry mocktail my husband and I enjoyed on a business trip. My version, however, uses fresh squeezed lime juice and honey in lieu of limeade concentrate along with fresh mint and local crushed frozen blackberries. I omit the alcohol so it's family friendly. Enjoy! | TraditionalCookingSchool.com

My husband and I look for every excuse to celebrate special occasions with a beautiful home-cooked meal and something special to drink. Often, we mark a holiday with a signature cocktail. The summer holidays are no exception — July 4th is official mojito day in our home.

I discovered the original recipe in a favorite cookbook given to me as a bridal shower gift from my mother. It used frozen limeade concentrate as a base. Since we have drifted further and further away from anything processed, I have been on the lookout for ways to use more natural ingredients without compromising flavor.

And then, a few years ago while traveling with my husband on business, I discovered a blackberry variation on this drink.

Recently I attempted to create my own version of that delicious blackberry mocktail, but I used fresh squeezed lime juice and honey in lieu of the limeade concentrate. I added crushed frozen blackberries picked last summer from a local farm, and I eliminated the alcohol so it was a family-friendly beverage. Mint, fresh from the herb garden, also adds a special homegrown touch.

The recipe follows. It’s a bit on the tart side. If you prefer sweeter, simply increase the honey to taste. Enjoy!

About Jenny Cazzola

Tired of the stress of city life and motivated by a desire to be more self-sufficient, Jenny and her husband decided to trade life in the busy suburbs for life on a quiet country homestead. In the fall of 2012, they moved to an acreage in rural Northeastern Oklahoma where they are learning to live off the land and working to establish a small home grown heirloom produce business. On her blog Black Fox Homestead, Jenny writes about their transition from city to country life, offers tips on natural gardening, recipes from her kitchen, and ideas for frugal, simple living. She and her husband currently share their homestead with four shih-tzus and eight growing Rhode Island Red chicks; but she hopes to see ducks, dairy goats, and possibly a cow in her future.
