Last September, I bared it all and posted How I Take My Coffee (It's Not What You Think). In that post, I shared a brief history of coffee enemas along with my personal experience of this detoxifying therapy. I was overwhelmed by the supportive comments and questions. Now, one year later, I'm STILL doing coffee enemas daily!
In this post, I'm going to share some of the things that happened in my body as a result of the enemas.
Coffee Enemas: A God Thing?
I started coffee enemas last year as sort of a last-ditch effort to save my gallbladder, which had been bothering me off and on for years. I'd wanted to try coffee enemas for a long time, and when I found a highly recommended gallbladder cleanse which included coffee enemas, I knew it was time. The physical and mental feeling following my first coffee enema had me hooked! Even when the cleanse was over, I continued to do them.
Some of my other health issues didn't go away, however, and it was after this post that I decided to try a different approach. I found a practitioner over six hours away who agreed to test and treat me long-distance. Dr. C is trained in a healing approach called Nutritional Balancing that is gaining popularity.
After my initial hair mineral analysis and consultation with Dr. C in February, we concluded Nutritional Balancing was definitely the best treatment option for the myriad of mysterious issues I faced.
Now, what is the God thing of this all? Coffee enemas are a HUGE component of Nutritional Balancing! I believe the Lord was paving the way for my future healing by giving me the wisdom to begin coffee enemas. I was already a step ahead in my game, so to speak, and it wasn't too difficult for me to incorporate the other components of the program: a slow oxidizer diet, physician-recommended supplements, rest, and lifestyle changes. (I have not been able to do near infra-red saunas for financial reasons, but I am doing my best on every other part of the program.)
Daily coffee enemas are just part of my routine now — my kids and my husband know what mom's about to do when the coffee is simmering on the stove! I even take my enema supplies with me when I travel. I enjoy not only the detoxification aspect of coffee enemas, but also the time it gives me to be alone and quiet for 3o to 45 minutes. I catch up on reading, listen to calming music, pray, and even watch movies while I'm in the bathroom. It's time well spent!
I have had many positive physiological changes take place in my body as a result of daily coffee enemas. In addition to accomplishing my initial goal and actually saving my gallbladder, I have also experienced other positive changes.
For one, I used to be extremely sensitive to caffeine. One cup of coffee would make me jittery and nervous, my heart would race, and I felt like the sky was falling or something. It was bizarre. I was afraid that coffee enemas would give me the same reaction, but they didn't! I started with a small amount of coffee and have gradually increased to three heaping tablespoons of coffee per two quarts of water. Coffee enemas give me mental clarity — a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed feeling. 😉
I believe coffee enemas helped my body tolerate caffeine much better. Although I don't make a habit of it, I am now able to drink a cup of caffeinated coffee without experiencing the jitters, nervousness, heart palpitations, or insomnia.
Another great result of coffee enemas has been that my skin is always clear now. Thankfully, I have never had a problem with acne on my face but my back was constantly broken out. It was really annoying and embarrassing, especially in the summer time when my back wasn't always covered up. It took maybe three months but now I have ZERO breakouts on my back!
I have also experienced improved digestion, better ability to stay focused, improved sleep, and lessened anxiety.
Several times over this past year, I have experienced what can only be described as extreme healing reactions. During these times, I have been so thankful for Dr. C, who has helped me identify what was going on in my body. Coffee enemas are especially helpful for liver detoxification, and my liver was doing some serious detoxifying on several occasions.
In my first post, I wrote about the sudden rush of nausea and faintness that I sustained after my first coffee enema. It could be attributed to the large amount of toxins being released by my liver and eliminated through my colon at one time. Although that specific situation never happened again, I did undergo other healing reactions because of the toxins coming out of my liver, and they were kind of scary.
Four times, I have had actual allergic reactions during or immediately following my coffee enema. It started with a tickle in my throat and within ten minutes had escalated to wheezing, hives all over my body, coughing, watery eyes, and swollen lips. Dr. C believes that my liver was having a very difficult time processing the toxins from Phase 1 to Phase 2 detox, and that was most likely what caused these severe reactions. They lasted 20 to 30 minutes and slowly dissipated with the help of essential oils. Dr. C said that type of reaction is very rare because he had never had a patient experience what happened to me.
I also feel extremely “cleaned out”, and for good reason. I have been eating real food for about five years, but I was eating a very junky, very standard American diet with very few veggies and lots of processed food for 26 years prior. No doubt, there was a lot of old, decaying, undigested crud in my colon, and coffee enemas did their job very effectively! I won't go into great detail about what came out on the other side, but suffice it to say that it was very obvious by both appearance and smell (ewwww, I know!) that coffee enemas were really cleaning house!
Part of performing regular coffee enemas involves overcoming and making peace with the mental roadblocks that arise, namely the inevitable “ick factor”. I would be lying to you if I said I had never been shocked or surprised by some of the things I saw “on the other side”. Passing liver and gall stones has been a regular occurrence for me over this past year, especially once I finally hit and remained in Phase 2 detox for an extended period of time.
(As a person continues long-term detox, as I am because of Nutritional Balancing, the body vacillates between Phase 1 and Phase 2 detox. You go back and forth, and the amount of time you remain in each phase is different for each individual.)
How can you tell what liver and gallstones are?
Gallstones are typically pea green or dark green because bile, which is stored in the gallbladder, is green. Gallstones can be gray or white also, but I have personally never seen them. Liver stones are butter to mustard yellow. Stones float because they are less dense than water. In the last year I have passed a few hundred tiny and small gallstones and a few thousand liver stones. The largest liver stone I've seen has been about the size of a dime. You can Google gallstones and liver stones if you really want to see images of them. 😉
Another icky thing I've seen has been parasites. I mentioned this briefly in my first coffee enema post. Let's all just go ahead and agree that seeing parasites in the toilet is pretty disturbing, but it's very likely that we all have them to some degree. It's when they start causing problems (or when you see them in the toilet!) that you should be concerned. I was very worried when I saw the dead parasites, so I visited my naturopath, who put me on an herb-based parasite cleanse in addition to my coffee enemas. This past year I've done two 8-week parasite purges and am happy to say that I've seen no parasites in over four months!
Dr. Lawrence Wilson, a pioneer in Nutritional Balancing says this about coffee enemas and parasites:
It [the coffee enema] stimulates bile flow, mechanically cleans the colon, upsets many parasite nesting places, and the coffee is probably somewhat toxic for them as well. Many people call me to say they notice parasites in their stool after a coffee enema. Often they feel much better when the parasites are removed. The coffee may be directly toxic for the parasites, or the enema may just help loosen them and remove them from the body. The coffee enema also reduces liver toxicity and promotes extra bile secretion that weakens many parasites.
How Coffee Enemas Still Help Me
When you embark on a journey to detoxify your body from deep within, there are countless healing reactions or new “symptoms” that can rear their ugly heads and make the process less than enjoyable. Headaches, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, muscle inflammation, allergies, and more are common as the body processes through toxins in Phase 1 detox and then releases them in Phase 2. Coffee enemas are actually useful in BOTH stages.
When I am experiencing a healing reaction such as a headache or nausea that seems to be “out of nowhere”, I can do a coffee enema, and within an hour or so, the reaction passes. It took me a few months to figure this out, but now I don't have to suffer for days during an intense healing time. I simply do an extra coffee enema or two that day and watch the reaction pass fairly quickly.
Coffee enemas also lessen the severity of food reactions, in my experience. A few weeks ago, I made a green smoothie for my breakfast, and within minutes of drinking it, I felt so awful. Stomach pains, nausea, and muscle weakness set in with a vengeance, and I could barely get off the couch for a few hours. It finally passed, and I felt fine. Two days later, I made the same green smoothie for breakfast, and again, the same stomach discomfort and nausea set in.
It finally occurred to me that there was an ingredient in my smoothie that was causing this, and sure enough, I had used a brand of coconut cream that I had never used before as the base of my smoothie. I grabbed a can out of my pantry and read the ingredients. (I'm normally an avid ingredient-checker, but because of the brand and store from which I purchased the coconut cream, I felt it was a safe choice. Wrong!) There was an ingredient on the can that I couldn't pronounce, and to my knowledge, had never had before. I felt so miserable but I tried a coffee enema to help my body process this food additive.
Within 5 minutes of elimination, the nausea and stomach pain were gone! After about an hour, my energy levels were back up and I was able to eat a light snack and make it through the rest of the day with no problems.
You can be sure I won't be using that brand of coconut cream again, but on the flip side, I was so excited to discover that coffee enemas can even help with food reactions. I'm not sure how this would work for allergenic foods like gluten or casein, but I can't see how it would be anything but helpful if one accidentally ingested a sensitive food and needed to get over that reaction quickly.
In the Future
I don't foresee a time when I won't do coffee enemas, unless I feel that my body comes to a point of just not needing them any longer. This easy detoxification therapy has been so instrumental in my own healing that I want to keep doing them and keep seeing great results. Even Dr. Lawrence Wilson has done them daily for over 30 years with no adverse effects!
Of course, I am doing them in conjunction with a whole foods, nutrient dense diet and excellent supplements, and under the supervision of a knowledgable practitioner, all of which I plan to continue.
Update: As of May 2016, after 2 years and 10 months, I have stopped doing daily coffee enemas. Dr. C. and my new naturopath Dr. M. believe my health is restored to the point of no longer needing them daily. If I desire, I can do one once every week or two, but so far I haven't felt that I need them!
Since my first coffee enema post, have any of you tried a coffee enema? Have you made it part of your routine? What benefits have you seen? Anything crazy come out the other side? Let's share with each other so we can help and encourage one another toward better health!
