Welcome to another Real Food Quote Monday (RFQM). Each Monday, I quote from something I read, and ask you to add your thoughts.
Be a Lunatic, Too!
The introduction of a brand-new book by Joel Salatin — The Sheer Ecstasy of Being a Lunatic Farmer — is likely to inspire the renegade in you! We just received our copy, as a gift for contributing to the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund.
Joel Salatin writes:
“Every day I make thousands of beings happy. … I love moving chickens, cows, and pigs because I know how happy it makes them. …
Industrial foodists believe farmers like me are barbarians and Luddites. …to them, I'm a lunatic.
Indeed, I'm having the time of my life. Earthworms dance in my fields. Pigs fully express their pigness. Eggmobiles sanitize the fields. Enthusiastic young people work and learn. …
My goal in this book is to encourage the righteous side and to have fun doing it. Let's embrace being lunatics. Most great prophets were considered lunatics in their day. His contemporaries thought Jesus had a devil. Our side can either respond with hand wringing and despondency, or we can have fun enjoying our answers. Our truth. We can enjoy the sheer ecstasy of being lunatic farmers, either by proxy or for real. Welcome aboard. “
I'll tell you what, that's a train I'm proud to be on! I've only read the introduction, but I can hardly wait to dig in deeper. Life needs to slow down a bit, and this is my excuse. 🙂
Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense fund has a thumbs-up review of the book here. The book covers four topics: 1) principles to nurture the earth, 2) fiber and food production, 3) farming as a healing ministry, and 4) promoting community.
Anyone reading this book along with me? If you're further than me, feel free to let me know what I can look forward to enjoying!
