Jenny Cazzola

About Jenny Cazzola

Tired of the stress of city life and motivated by a desire to be more self-sufficient, Jenny and her husband decided to trade life in the busy suburbs for life on a quiet country homestead. In the fall of 2012, they moved to an acreage in rural Northeastern Oklahoma where they are learning to live off the land and working to establish a small home grown heirloom produce business. On her blog Black Fox Homestead, Jenny writes about their transition from city to country life, offers tips on natural gardening, recipes from her kitchen, and ideas for frugal, simple living. She and her husband currently share their homestead with four shih-tzus and eight growing Rhode Island Red chicks; but she hopes to see ducks, dairy goats, and possibly a cow in her future.

Maintaining an attitude of gratefulness? That can be a challenge for anyone. Life isn't always easy, but we can always choose to be grateful, no matter what our circumstances. Here are four ways in which I'm working to maintain an attitude of gratitude during this Thanksgiving season.

How to Cultivate an Attitude of Gratitude

Are you avoiding white potatoes? Will you miss the potato casseroles that are so typical of holiday meals? Try this versatile, tried-and-true family recipe!

Confession: Until recently, we tended to our brooding chicks in our home office. We spend most of our time in this room anyway, and it's so fun to watch them while we're working! Then I discovered that it is possible to brood chicks outside, and it's a win-win for us and the chicks!

How to Brood Chicks Outside

Beef rendang is a common Indonesian beef stew simmered in coconut sauce. This easy and healthy recipe cooks low and long on the stove top, filling your home with fragrant Asian spices. Serve with some soaked rice or cauli-rice!

You hear it again and again in homesteading circles... Loss is inevitable. And that makes caring for any living thing emotionally challenging. Can these hard times teach us anything? Difficult as it is, the answer is yes.

5 Lessons from Loss on the Homestead

I was somewhat idealistic about raising chickens... I envisioned going to the chicken yard in a pretty apron, grabbing a good-sized chicken, swiftly processing it on a chopping block, taking it to the kitchen, and serving a gorgeous roast chicken a few short hours later. Then expectation met reality...

Meat Birds: Heritage vs. Hybrid {What You Need To Know}

It's just a fact of life... Odds and ends, junk piles, dirt piles, you name it. Any homesteader would agree, because gardening, caring for livestock, and living on a shoestring doesn't always allow for the minimalist approach! Here are 14 inexpensive (or free) items I always keep around...

Don’t Throw That Away! 14 Useful Items to Repurpose or Purchase Inexpensively

As soon as the cool weather begins to set in, my husband and I immediately begin to talk about fall. I really look forward to the fall flavors, particularly apples. A neighbor recently brought me a huge grocery sack full of them, and inspired this dish!

Super Simple Pork Chop, Sweet Potato, and Apple Skillet

One of the joys of keeping chickens is raising chicks, and not much is more exciting than seeing a mother hen raise her own baby chicks! Hatching fertile eggs was more of a long range goal on our part, but our hens had other plans. Our first natural hatch happened by accident.

Our First Natural Hatch

When we first got chickens, I thought chicken feed was one-size-fits-all. I thought I could just go to the store and purchase "chicken feed". I soon learned differently. What you feed your birds directly depends on their purpose and how you're raising them. Feeding your chickens... this is what I've learned.

Feeding Your Chickens

I discovered this soup last summer during the garden abundance of yellow lemon cucumbers. I love that it requires only a food processor -- no oven at all! The color is a delicate pink, making it ideal for a feminine summer gathering such as a bridal shower, yet the smoky flavor is robust enough that my husband enjoys having it for dinner.

In the spring, I'm gung-ho about gardening. By the time the late summer heat hits, weeds are out of control, a pest is ruining my sunflowers, and I'm behind on fall planting. I wonder: Why on earth am I doing this? Here are 7 things I've learned that keep me going when I'm overwhelmed.

How to Keep Going In Your Garden When Your Garden Has You Completely Overwhelmed

Recently, I created my own version of a delicious blackberry mocktail my husband and I enjoyed on a business trip. My version, however, uses fresh squeezed lime juice and honey in lieu of limeade concentrate along with fresh mint and local crushed frozen blackberries. I omit the alcohol so it's family friendly. Enjoy!

Pumpkins are a favorite garden vegetable. Not only do they make pretty fall decorations for your front porch, but they perform beautifully in the kitchen -- starring in a number of savory and sweet recipes. If you have space in your garden, they're really easy to grow -- here's how.

How to Grow Pumpkins
