Tracey Vierra

About Tracey Vierra

Tracey has been eternally blessed with a Godly husband to share her days; five beautiful, healthy, witty children who never cease to amaze her; a comfortable place to live amidst the hills and valleys of middle Tennessee; all while being surrounded by neighbors who cluck, crow, moo, chirp, buzz, and allow them to enjoy God's creation. You'll find her reading or attempting to make some new concoction in the kitchen, usually with a baby on one hip and at least one other little one mixing, stirring, or tasting. Tracey and her family offer traditional prepared sourdough and gluten-free cereals at Hill and Hollow.

Sometimes I just want to sip on something cool and refreshing. The sunny afternoons around here call for something refreshing -- a Vanilla Maca Cooler. With vanilla, a bit of cinnamon and nutmeg, a raw egg yolk for sustained energy, and some raw milk, this is the perfect recipe for running errands, reading a book, or kicking back on your front porch.

We've eaten hotel breakfasts in all of our past moves. Those fluffy hotel waffles are so tempting! But when we eat them, my littles complain of belly aches, and I feel frumpy and sluggish. We solved our waffle cravings by making them at home with nourishing ingredients. Fermented berries and yogurt cheese top fluffy, slightly crisp sourdough waffles –- a scrumptious breakfast for any morning!

Recently I realized that I just couldn't remember the last time I'd woken up feeling completely rested. My lack of energy could have been caused by a number of things; all I know is that I wanted to feel better. Enter: maca. I experimented with it by putting it in all my drinks. My energy now? Extended instead of sporadic! Here is one hot drink that gets my day going with maca!

About a month ago I had one of those ugggh moments. A good friend of mine had excitedly shared a new idea for on-the-go protein bars -- something low in sugar, high in protein, and satisfyingly kid-friendly. Yet, I snubbed her idea, passing it off as having too much sugar. The next week, when she visited again to pick up her milk share at our home, she brought me a sample of her newly concocted protein bar. Boy, was it good! So, I ate my humble pie, asked for forgiveness, and requested to borrow her idea and share this wonderful creation with you all.

Just before the cold sets in, God leaves us a final parting gift before winter hibernation... The black walnut tree is ready for harvest. We had been purchasing an herbal mixture for our goats. When we realized the main ingredient was black walnut hull, it was a no-brainer! Time to put these ankle-rollers to good use because black walnuts have amazing properties!

Homemade Baby Food {from the land, not the jar} | The gift I *didn't* receive at my first baby shower? A book on making baby food from scratch. So I bought one myself. I finally put it to use with our 4th and 5th blessings, who grew big and fast. Here are the foods I introduced and at what age. | TraditionalCookingSchool.com

We purchased our home thrilled with everything about it -- except the busy road on which it is situated. Instead of bemoaning our problem, we've been thinking of ways to turn the lemon of traffic into lemonade. ;) This is the story of how our family's entrepreneurial spirit is blooming.

A Family Entrepreneurial Spirit

Two months ago, my wildly rambunctious three-year-old fell ill. He complained of stomach pain and ran a sporadic high fever for two days. Doctor after doctor analyzed our now lethargic and frail little man. A little bite from the mouth of a wretched tick brought about this entire ordeal. Here's the whole story and how we're fighting back...

Ever tried to make your own homemade hair products? Coconut oil made my hair a greasy mess; another concoction gave me a flat head. Then I came across something that not only worked, it was affordable. My homemade hair gel (together with my citrus hair spray) provides better, healthier, and more holistic results than anything I used to buy!

Vanilla Ginger Chai Tea {with a nourishing gelatin boost!} | In recent years, I've avoided vanilla chai drinks because of the caffeine and sugar. Then I happened up on this warm, soothing, nourishing, mug-worthy morning drink, and I include gelatin for a nutritional boost. If you like chai, I believe you will love this homemade version as much as I do! | TraditionalCookingSchool.com

Our home was plagued with terrible coughs earlier this winter. So, I reached for our fruit-derived Vitamin C and made batch after batch of these gummies. Within a week, the coughs lessened -- or completely went away. | TraditionalCookingSchool.com

Instead of sharing conversational hearts, my little ones and loving husband will indulge in one of my favorite childhood treats -- pecan tarts. It's a recipe from my mom, only remade with less processed and more wholesome ingredients, of course. | TraditionalCookingSchool.com

How We Came Upon Traditional Foods | I never imagined that a bottle of baby shampoo could change our lives. After the birth of our son (our first child), I read an article mentioning all the horrible chemicals it contained. And I cringed. So much questioning began. Traditional foods did not enter the picture right away. They came eventually, after other changes led the way. | TraditionalCookingSchool.com

Blossom Cheese {Easy Homemade Soft Cheese} | Since I am nursing a little one and homeschooling, time is not on my side. So I need a simple way to make cheese and add some variety to it as well. So here you are: the easiest cheese to make, requiring little working time and effort, and our favorite variations: Honey Hazelnut Yogurt Cheese Ball and Onion & Garlic Yogurt Cheese. | TraditionalCookingSchool.com

Gifts That Will Last | How many moments of blessing or gratitude have I missed by simply not looking? Busy-ness lends itself to fast-paced thoughtlessness. By not finding this balance, do I miss many gifts from the Lord that are right before my eyes? I think the balance is struck when we focus on what is lasting. | TraditionalCookingSchool.com

A New Life {Amos Thomas} | Ten months ago, we found out we were expecting our fifth child. After practicing a traditional foods diet for two and a half years, I was so excited about the potential impact on me and the new child during my pregnancy, especially because I have a rare genetic disorder. Runner's Story | I woke up on the big day -- the day devoted to butchering our first rooster, Runner -- to the sound of squawking guineas and roosters crowing. I had imagined this day over and over again in my thoughts but I didn't know how it would go. How would I feel? Would I be able to participate? | GNOWFGLINS.com
