In this episode of Know Your Food with Wardee, I’m joined by special guest and friend Sarah Pope, blogger at The Healthy Home Economist and author of the new book Get Your Fats Straight.

We talk about how we all got so fat and sick (hint: it has to do with the fats we’re eating). Also, Sarah shares the three simple nutritional practices you can implement right now to lose weight, reduce inflammation, and gain energy. Plus much more!

About Sarah

Sarah earned her Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Furman University, where she was valedictorian of her class, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa and subsequently receiving a Masters of Government Administration with a major in Public Financial Management from the University of Pennsylvania. Sarah worked for over 10 years in the field of Information Technology designing Financial Systems for private and government organizations.

As people so often do after a decade or so of working in the corporate world, Sarah wondered if there might be more to life. So she withdrew from the workaday world and started a consultancy business and eased into family life — eventually having three babies born naturally at a local birthing center. All three children spent their first night at home with their parents and have lived healthy, vibrant lives ever since.

Since 2002, Sarah has acted as Nutrition Educator and Chapter Leader for the Weston A. Price Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to getting the truth about nutrition out to the masses. In the summer of 2011, she joined the Weston A. Price Foundation as a Board Member.

Sarah is the author of Get Your Fats Straight. You can find Sarah at The Healthy Home Economist.

What I Think About Sarah’s Book, Get Your Fats Straight

"Get Your Fats Straight" by Sarah Pope

I love it! It is an easy and informative read. To my knowledge, there’s not another book like it. You’ll get a good history lesson plus excellent health info, neither of which are overwhelming or above-your-head. Additionally, Sarah’s advice in terms of what to implement in your life is so common sense and basic that you’ll be ready to make changes TODAY. And finally, Sarah includes some really yummy-sounding recipes that use healthy fats. They’re family approved and most are inexpensive to make.

Here’s where you can buy Get Your Fats Straight.

It’s a Kindle eBook, but you don’t need a Kindle because amazon offers free Kindle apps for computers or mobile devices.

Someone asked me today about grapeseed oil and why it shouldn’t be used as part of a healthy fats diet. I wasn’t sure what to tell her, as I’ve never used grapeseed oil. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Hi Julianne, grapeseed oil is extremely high in polyunsaturated fats which Westerners already get plenty of in their diet. Best to avoid this oil.

Sara — Yes, I know. 🙁 I can’t for the life of me figure out how to replace that file in iTunes without deleting my feed.

Hi Wardeh. It was so nice to hear 2 of my favorite bloggers both at the same time. Since I’ve been a fan of both of you for some time now, I wasn’t surprised at anything Sarah said. But of course it’s always nice to hear great information to educate myself even further about good nutrition.

I’m so happy that you’re having success in this new forum and look forward to many more informative podcasts to come!

Yay for fats! I really appreciate how Sarah puts fats simply for anyone who is ready to make a change. What an important resource.

I learned about traditional foods two and a half years ago, just a few months before my first pregnancy. Adding the right fats helped me get my cycles healthy and regular after years of weird ones, so we could conceive with confidence.

Three months ago I started eating low carb and upped my fat intake even more (including tallow for the first time, coincidentally). My cycles responded again when my luteal phase lengthened by two days and I had NO discomfort when my new cycle started (I was wondering if I was pregnant!).
In addition (my husband and) I lost fat pounds with ease, my skin is silkier, and my teeth feel cleaner. And, like Sarah mentioned about endurance, I no longer have the afternoon dip in energy – which is a HUGE bonus for a mother!

How much of my experience is from taking out carbs (though they were traditional/unprocessed ones like fruit, potatoes, and soaked grains) and how much is due to adding more fat? I don’t exactly know. I am of eastern European descent, but not sure if that plays a part here. I am fascinated by the differences the details of traditional diets can make in each person, and how they also vary from person to person. We really all have to research our own bodies and find what works best.

I appreciate both of you bloggers who take the time to share your experiences with us, so I wanted to share another testimony to the value of goods old fashioned fats!

Amy — I’m sorry about that. I’m not sure why it went away, but it sure did. I just put it back. 🙂
