One week at a time, you can prepare for any kind of disaster — whether job loss, illness, or something more widespread. That’s the whole point of survival expert Jim Cobb’s (Survival Weekly) new book. In Countdown to Preparedness, he shares a 52-week plan that will help you gather food and water, stock emergency supplies, create a bug-out plan, and much more.
In today’s podcast, Jim joins me to talk about his new book and much more! Get to know him through the links and information below, and of course through this podcast. Plus… the tip of the week!

Tip of the Week: Protect Food Storage from Rodents!
This tip comes from our own recent experience with a mouse getting into our food storage. He was chewing on vacuum-sealed packages that were on a curtain-covered shelf. We realized that it is better to store all food that’s not in cupboards in buckets — even in the house. By the way, this experience was a great wake-up call for me to re-inventory and clean up our pantry!
Listener Question
Today’s question comes from Kim — and it’s for you to answer (because I’ve never heard of it):
“An acquaintance mentioned his wife bakes bread and cakes with fruit yeast. She soaks dried unsprayed fruit, like organic raisins, in water for a few days until the water bubbles and the fruit floats. Then she uses the water to bake. Have you heard of this method? If yes, how do you use it and does it fit in with traditional prep of food? It sounds like it might as it looks like the fruit is fermenting the water or something.“
And… what say you? Please share in the comments if you’ve heard of this before, know more about what’s going on, and/or have any recipes that use this technique!

About Jim Cobb
“Jim has been a student of survivalism and emergency preparedness for almost thirty years. As a young child, he drove his parents nuts with stockpiling supplies in the basement every time he heard there was a tornado watch in his area. Of course, being a child, those supplies consisted of his teddy bear, a few blankets and pillows, and random canned goods he grabbed from the kitchen cabinets. Later, he was the first (and likely only) child in his fifth grade class to have bought his very own copy of Life After Doomsday by Bruce Clayton. Today, he is a freelance writer whose work has been published in national magazines such as Boy’s Life and Complete Survivalist Magazine. He is a voracious reader with a keen interest in all stories with post-apocalyptic settings. He maintains the Library at the End of the World blog and is also the Content Director for SurvivalWeekly.com. He currently resides in a fortified bunker in the upper Midwest, accompanied by his lovely wife and their three adolescent Weapons of Mass Destruction.”
