Happy New Year! This is more of a personal podcast, where I talk about the highlights of 2014 for me and my family, and I talk about what I have in mind (Lord willing) for 2015, plus I share my “word” for 2015 and give you a printable of my favorite quote by Mother Theresa.
But it doesn’t stop there. No, this podcast requires your input, too!
I asked you 4 questions. Here they are (answer below in the comments):
- Share below any reflections about your 2014.
- What are your goals for 2015?
- What’s your “word” for 2015?
- Do you have advice for me about digitally storing recipes?
Give this podcast a listen to hear my thoughts on 2014, goals for 2015, and my “word” for 2015 (it’s “best”). Plus… weekly listener question and the tip of the week!
I can’t wait to hear from you. 🙂

“Do It Anyway” by Mother Theresa
This is the Mother Theresa poem that I have printed and hanging by my desk. I read it all the time!

Tip of the Week: Diffuse Essential Oils for Congestion/Breathing/Allergies
When I was recording this podcast, I was getting over an allergy attack from house cleaning. Yes, I’m allergic to deep cleaning. 🙂 However, this time I got over it much more quickly and I slept breathing clearly that first night of the attack — thanks to diffusing essential oils.
(That’s my diffuser pictured above, and no, I can’t find it sold anywhere!)
Here are good oils to diffuse for congestion/cold/breathing: eucalyptus, lavender, lemon, peppermint, white fir, lime, rosemary, thyme. I used a blend called Breathe Ease from Rocky Mountain Oils (to which I added some peppermint).
Thanks to Traditional Cooking School members for the advice!
Listener Question
Susan F. asks:
“I came to your site because your Facebook page always has some good posts for substitutions. I am wondering if you have ever tried a substitution for corn syrup in recipes. Most of the corn syrup I can find at the store has high fructose corn syrup in with the corn syrup and since I’m trying to avoid high fructose corn syrup I can’t use it. Obviously I want something that doesn’t have much taste. Agave syrup, liquid cane sugar, sorghum, maple syrup, honey, some combo of these? Thanks in advance.”

My word for 2015 – Intentional
In 2014, I learned many new things. Never stop learning is my mantra. Many new things I’d love to learn this coming year. I still haven’t done lacto fermentation so that is way up high on my list. We also began a Reading Streak in our home, trying to read aloud every single day of the year as well as reach out into my community to share great books. We started officially on Thanksgiving Day. We do a lot of Bible memory but I would like to try memorizing a long passage.
I have no advice on how to do anything digitally! 🙂
Wardee Harmon says
Robin – Thanks for sharing. I love the word Intentional 🙂 Let me know if I can help you with your fermenting goals.
Denise says
My word for the year is Prayer. One of my goals for 2015 is to grow in humility, and prayer, to pray for the things that are on God’s heart.
I would like to try cheese making this year.
Wardee Harmon says
Denise – Yes, I love your words and goals. Prayer and Humility should be high on all our lists. God bless you in 2015!

I can’t find the notes about your scanner Wardee. Am I at the wrong place? I appreciated your discussion on paperless and want to check into that so I’m valuing your opinion on which to choose. Thanks for the quote also!
Wardee Harmon says
Trudy, you’re in the right place – I just neglected to add them. I just edited the post, so if you refresh they should be there.
Just in case:
Here’s the scanner: Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500
Here’s the shredder: Fellowes 99Ci
God bless you! Thanks for the heads up!

I really enjoyed the podcast but was quite alarmed when you said you’re going to scan all your photos into some electronic file and then SHRED them! Noooooo. I even discussed this with my hubby at supper that night and he was totally shocked as well. Electronic files are not safe, they are not fool proof, and they are not permanent. Files get accidentally deleted, devices crash, technology changes constantly -rendering old files obsolete and inaccessible. (If you don’t believe me I have quite a few “state of the art” zip disks that make nice coasters along with their 5 1/4″ and 3 1/2″ cousins. Useless, all of them because computers have changed and no longer have a way to read them.)
Scan if you like but if your photos are important to you PLEASE reconsider destroying the original copies. Besides, if you have no power you can have a fun family time leafing through and laughing over boxes of old photos. 😉

Hi Wardee, thank you for Words of Wisdom file! I downloaded and shared it as well.
As I think about a good word for 2015 nothing but Health, Love & Life comes to mind. 🙂
I am so excited to hear about your weight loss! I gotta do that too. I was postponing it for too long.
I also have lots of pictures and recipes on paper.
Honestly, I love turning book pages and touch pictures with my hands. It has nostalgic feel, I enjoy it. Recently my external harddrive crashed without warning and I lost all my files. Devastation! Thanks goodness, my friend helped me recover 75% of it. And I am very careful with what I use from now on. Old pictures that I treasure – in albums. All digital pictures and documents – in digital form, recipes – also in two forms. And I have a recipe box. I like using it. I guess I am not a big help for you here…
Have a wonderful 2015!

Hi Wardeh,
I enjoyed hearing about your successes for 2014 and your plans for 2015. You are always motivating to me! Anyway, I just had to write you a quick note and congratulate you on your success with THM. I encouraged you in the very beginning way back when in the forums when you began the THM plan. I am so happy for you! You look like you feel great!
Our stories are very similar in that I found my success with THM and started a good exercise/strength training program the year I turned 40 🙂 back in 2013. I feel so blessed to feel better now than I did at any time in my 30’s so I can relate to your story. Thank goodness for what I’ve learned through THM and for your info here at GNOWFGLINS 🙂 Keep up the great work! Thanks again, Rhonda
