In this episode of Know Your Food with Wardee, I’m joined by occupational therapist Susan L. Roberts, an autism educator and consultant and author of the book My Kid Eats Everything!. She helps children go from picky or problem eating to eating everything and anything — all through the most important rule of making meal times fun. We talked about her methods, the difference between picky and problem eaters, why children might become picky eaters, and inspiring stories of children who became adventurous eaters. Plus more!

Got a picky or problem eater? Why not try out Susan’s free 25-minute phone or Skype consultation? If you want to go further, Susan offers long-distance coaching. I also recommend Susan’s book, My Kid Eats Everything!, which I’ve read twice myself and highly recommend.

About Susan

After more than 20 years of experience in school-based pediatrics, as well opening and operating a play-based pediatric clinic in Tucson, Arizona, I moved to New York to take a faculty position. This led to lecturing nationally on the subjects of Handwriting, Toileting and Mealtime Success. My clinical and research interests focus on the primary occupation of childhood, PLAY, and holistic approaches for achieving optimal health and wellness.

I enjoy traveling around the U.S. teaching parents and professionals how to have happy mealtimes full of nutritious food, and I love spending time with children and their families even more. Nothing beats the happiness of watching picky eaters become adventurous eaters, and seeing mealtimes transformed from battlegrounds to beloved family rituals. Through individual coaching, play experiences, and support groups we discover the art of raising happy children for a peaceful world.

I don’t have a single autistic child, and yet I found this to be such a helpful episode.

When my family was smaller our kitchen table was so small that we could not fit our plates on the table without leaving the serving dishes at the stove. I started the process filling plates for everybody and before the meal began. I just realized how much more fun our meals would be and how much less grumbling we would have if we transitioned to serving family style.

I was also really taken aback to realize that enjoyment of food affects how nutritious it is. I’m still muddling over that one.

Thanks so much for this excellent episode.

Elisabeth — I know, wasn’t that interesting about how enjoyment affects nutrition?

I look forward to hearing how it goes transitioning back to family style! We, too, dish up in the kitchen, but instead of being for lack of space, it is to keep the mess down and the process simple.

Thanks for listening and commenting! 🙂
