KYF #076: Urban Farming with Kids |A homestead in the city where kids (both kinds) are the star of the show? You bet! DaNelle Wolford, her husband, and children do exactly that. On 1 acre in Arizona, they raise goats, sheep, chickens, and a garden, too, producing much of their own food. It's a family affair! Plus... the tip of the week! | KnowYourFoodPodcast.com/76

A homestead in the city where kids (both kinds) are the star of the show? You bet! DaNelle Wolford, her husband, and children do exactly that in Arizona. On 1 acre, they raise goats, sheep, chickens, and a garden, too, producing 100% of their milk and eggs, 50% of their meat, and 50% of their fruit, veggies, and nuts.

You probably already know DaNelle from the fun blog Weed ’em & Reap, and today you’re going to hear more about her homestead in the city and how they make it a family affair.

Get to know DaNelle through the links and information below, and of course through this podcast. Plus… the tip of the week!

Listener Question

Today’s question comes from Liz:

“I have a food question which I’m having a tough time finding answers for – and forgive me if it’s answered elsewhere on your site. I am experienced in the Nourishing Traditions approach, but am having a tough time converting (because of severe allergies) to egg-free, gluten-free, rice-free, corn-free, oat-free baking. Can you tell me if bean flours are healthy if they are soaked first? I have avoided them a long time but when I can’t use so many other things, it would be really handy to use them as well.

My concern is that normally after beans are soaked the water is poured off before cooking. I’m concerned that soaking the flours and then baking them (such as in muffins) will keep the phytates in the food, thus not really accomplishing anything by soaking them in the first place.“

You’ll find my answer in the podcast.

About “Urban Farming for Kids” Video Class

“In the online “Urban Farming for Kids” video class, your kids will learn how to raise chickens and goats, and gardening, too — by following along with Ethan and Lydia Wolford (DaNelle’s kids). Ethan has been living on a farm since he was 5 years old. He’s a great friend, and fun to laugh with. He’s also one of the best “chicken wranglers” around and can catch a chicken faster than you can say, “cluckity cluck”. Lydia has been living on a farm for most of her life. She loves all kinds of animals and always tries to save any animal that is hurt. She is the goat milker queen on her farm. She’s got speedy hands, that one!

In their online video class, Ethan and Lydia — kids who know a lot about urban farming — will teach your kids to work hard and have fun!”

About the eBook “Have Your Cake & Lose Weight, Too!”

“Eat cake. Lose Weight. Are you tired of diet plans that leave you feeling hungry and unsatisfied? What if there was a way to lose weight AND heal your body without having to restrict food? This book explains how DaNelle Wolford did it, and how you can, too.

At only 29 years of age and her whole life ahead of her, DaNelle Wolford knew that something had to be done. It was then that she decided to do something drastically different from the harsh diets and attempts to deny herself of food that she craved. She turned to what others were calling “real food”. After years of controlling her portions and trying to force down barely edible rabbit food with less than mediocre results, DaNelle embraced real food and found the secret to weight loss and healing. Not only did she find that she could eat dessert every day, she also found that life was enjoyable once again!

As if her body was yearning for this lifestyle all along, she was able to lose all of her excess fat and heal without taking diet pills, counting calories, avoiding yummy foods, or doing any unwanted exercise. DaNelle’s down to earth personality and charming dialogue will encourage you to finally find the life you want by eating real food that is both nourishing and satisfying.

Whether you’re hoping to lose weight or heal your body from problems your doctors don’t seem to have an answer for, you will love DaNelle’s simple method to finally losing the weight and finding freedom from those crappy restrictive diets.”
