What’s in Episode #2?

In this episode of Know Your Food with Wardee, I visit with Joseph Bray from Wholesome Family Farm. Joe, with his wife and almost eight children, runs a raw dairy herdshare farm in Cottage Grove, Oregon*. He shares how he got into dairy farming, the benefits and risks with raising raw dairy, how he runs the twice daily milking of nine Jersey cows, and how he keeps the milk clean and fresh.

In this podcast, I mentioned an article on raw milk that features Joe’s farm and family — here’s a link to that article. The article — The Raw Truth About Raw Milk — is good and balanced and well worth reading!

Be sure to visit Joe’s farm website and like their page on Facebook, too.

*Update: since recording this podcast, Joe shared some very good news. He found a larger property and is moving his herdshare off the 6-acre farm (plus additional leased land) in Cottage Grove to a 67-acre farm in Creswell, Oregon. 🙂 We’re really happy for him, his family, and their cows!

What’s Coming Up…

Today’s podcast is actually Part 1 of 2; Joe and I talked so long and about such good stuff that I had to break it up into two parts!

So, do join us next week for Part 2  — we continue the conversation, discussing raw dairy farming in Oregon, natural handling of mastitis, and resources for those interested in finding or raising raw dairy. You don’t want to miss it!

It’s Your Turn

Got any questions for Joe about herd shares, raw milk, or anything else? Please ask away!

Wardeh, that was so good! I find myself wishing I was living in your area and could buy from Joe. We are buying raw milk (I’m the only one drinking it right now) but I’m not sure our dairy lady is using a closed milking system. I recall her saying something about her new milker drawing a a lot of static electricity and thereby attracting dust to the milking instruments. If she was using a closed system, I am imagining this would not affect the milk. I had this conversation with her after noticing some debris in the milk, having not seen this before. This person is the only source of raw milk in our area… I’m going to have to talk with her again. If you have any feedback to provide whether you’d drink milk from a system other than a closed one like Joe’s, I’d love to hear it. Thanks again for a great podcast!

      Hi Michelle,

I’m afraid not knowing what milking equipment your provider uses its a bit difficult to comment specifically. However, whether you use a milking system or just milk by hand there is a filtering process that should remove any possible debris from the milk. If this is a consistent problem I would be very concerned that basic cleanliness is not a big enough priority . Being a producer I understand that accidents can happen, I would encourage you to sit in on a milking. Observe the whole process, take notes, ask questions, maybe even make suggestions. If your provider is unwilling to listen and take you seriously then I would contact your local Weston A. Price chapter leader and see if there is another source. It is my hope that your source will be encouraged to step up their game and you be thoroughly satisfied.

      Joe

Thank you, Joe; I appreciate your taking the time to comment. My dairy lady has invited us to come and see how things work. You’re right; I need to take her up on that very soon.
