Theresa suffered for years but doctors told her there was nothing wrong (yet she would probably be on prescription medications for the rest of her life!). After deep research of her own, she found out that she had multiple chemical sensitivities and embarked on her own healing journey with alternative health care and whole foods.

10 Easy Ways to Pack More Fermented Foods In Your Child’s Lunch
Fermented foods are one of the best ways to pack a nutritional punch in any meal. And they’re an essential part of many gut-healing diets, so adding fermented foods to a school lunch is a simple addition. The problem lies in knowing what to pack and how to provide variety.
Check out all the ideas here: 10 Easy Ways to Pack More Fermented Foods In Your Child’s Lunch.
Listener Question
Lori asks:
“I made a sourdough starter yesterday, I used a pack of quick rise yeast, in warm water, 2 cups all-purpose flour, just a sprinkle of raw sugar and enough warm water to mix it well. Waited till it got a little bubbly on top, covered with cheese cloth. Today it was growing with bubbles, so I took out 2 cups and added 1 cup more flour. Mixed well till a good consistency. Wow, the pan cakes I made with the 2 cups I took out were the best I’ve ever had. I added my own vanilla paste to the batter, they were what makes your eyes roll back in your head! Yum. It is a good living start, growing as we speak. =) Have ever used quick rise yeast?”

About Teresa Jungling and Living Natural Today
“I (Teresa) struggled through many years of illness that medical doctors could not diagnose. After multiple CAT Scans, MRIs, ultra sounds, blood tests, and visits with specialists all ending in frustration, I looked into more natural healthcare. I was determined to find answers and not to be given prescription medications for the rest of my life! It was only after seeking alternative ways that I was diagnosed with endocrine and autonomic nervous system issues. The worst of it being major adrenal fatigue, hormone imbalances, immune problems and multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) to name a few.
Also, in my pursuit of answers to health related issues, I became aware of many environmental toxins and chemicals. The more I researched, the more I learned about how unhealthy our food, beauty products, cleaning chemicals, and other commonly used items can be for us.
As a Christian, there were times when I questioned why I was going through all of the frustration and pain that came from these health challenges. As I traveled from doctor to doctor, I wondered why I couldn’t find a proper diagnosis (not knowing what’s making your body sicker and weaker is VERY frustrating). However, I never gave up hope that the Lord would see me through. Eventhough I didn’t give up, there were days I couldn’t pray. I didn’t know what to say. I was so upset and discouraged. Still in my heart, I knew I was going through this for a reason and that He had a plan for me.
I developed my website Living Natural Today as a result of my personal health challenges due to living in “today’s” world. It is a resource to help inspire others who might be struggling with the similar health related issues that I have experienced, and to give people a central resource in regards to living a more natural lifestyle.
I realize that chemicals, toxins, environmental factors, stress and food all played a role as to why I became so ill. I am on the road to recovery and I now know that it IS POSSIBLE to feel better. Living naturally is a key to better health!”

My husband became ill, two months after we built a new house and shut the windows for the fall weather. Previous to that he had never missed a day of work in 30 years. His aha moment was when we had the warranty person to inspect in case there was mold in the basement. He pointed up to the chipboard sub floor in the basement and said that board sometimes gives people head aches. The glue in that board has formaldehyde, as do almost all of the building products. Because we didn’t figure it out for a long time it developed into multiple chemicals. He slept on the deck from spring until fall and we started looking for an older home with no updates. We found one eventually and now live a very simple life. He lost his job and basically secluded in our house to keep away from chemicals and walked in the woods when he had an exposure. One time, we were driving down the highway and drove past some large machinery building an overpass. My husband was talking and as soon as my nose smelled the machine, his voice changed in that instant. Another time, his nose started to bleed and we realized that there was formalehyde in the environment we thought was safe. We now use mechanical cleaning cloths (Enjo) and only use baking soda and vinegar as a product to clean with. Our perception from advertising is that a certain fragrance means clean and really clean has no smell. We use Nature Clean products for laundry, which were developed because of their mom’s health issues. Our livestyle has changed greatly and we now have a few friends and wonderful family who do their best not to expose my husband to chemicals. It is amazing how we keep meeting people with real food values and are striving to live chemical free. My husband is getting better and better all the time and is on a recovery road. I have always been sensitive to perfumed products and am now even more sensitive from living in such a “clean” environment to the point that I can taste chemicals on my tongue if I go into certain stores. But, that gives me a greater awareness and I am very greatful that we are living in a much safer environment. I researched on how I could help my husband for two years in my spare time and focused on healthy, homemade food. That is how I came to discover Gnowfglins and the first step was making bone broth soup. Which is now a weekly occurance. Thank you Wardee for helping us in this step towards healing.

So sorry to hear about your husband. I hate to hear stories like this, yet I totally understand because I’ve been there. Unfortunately, I hear of a lot of people getting MCS after living with new carpet, or mold. I’ve heard it takes around 4 years for a new house to off-gas. The formaldehyde you mention is awful too. Glad you became aware of MCS and have moved into a safer environment. I didn’t mention it during the interview, but I have a radio show that talks about minimizing toxins. I’ve done a couple of shows about MCS that you and your husband might be interested in. You can find the show through my website.

Would love to know what you and Theresa use for laundry detergent, dish detergent, and shampoos. I used to love BioKleen for dishes and laundry until they changed the formulas and now have a long list of chemicals in the product.

Hi Kate
I live in Canada and we use Nature Clean. They have a good product line for cleaning, laundry and shampoo, liquid hand soap, bar soap etc. I don’t know if it is available in the U.S. For cleaning we rely mostly on Enjo Cloths. These mechanical cloths and cold water do an amazing job. They originate in Austria and are used in some of the hospitals there. It is an investment but they last a long time, and you recoup the money you would ordinarily spend on all those separate cleaning products that are replaced throughout the year. Our family and friends now use Enjo as well. Before that we relied on baking soda, vinegar and inexpensive dollar store cloths. Chemical based cleaning products leach chemicals into the air through the container, so even if you are not using them, they still affect the air.
Debra Lynn Dadd has an excellent website for the U.S. and the Environmental Working Group are a resource my husband refers to often. Your local health food store should have some safe products. We are fortunate to have an organic section in our grocery store. The good thing is that consumers are now demanding safer products and there is more available. Hope this helps.

Hi,
Thanks for the info….I can not find the list of ingredients for the laundry detergent.

They dub those of us with MCS as canaries since we have reactions to chemicals like a canary used to have reactions to dangerous gases in a coal mine. I’ve tried a lot of different cleaning products. I figure if I can handle them, they should be pretty non-toxic. I use a lot of baking soda and vinegar for things. For the bath, I use a local business who makes a non-toxic cleaner. For dish washer detergent, the one I found I can handle the best is Shaklee and for laundry detergent, the one I like the best is Youngevity.

Hi Theresa,
Thank you for the info. It is helpful. I am wondering what you handwash dishes and pans that do not go in the dishwasher with?

Unfortunately, I don’t have a good suggestion for that. Here’s a link to soaps on the EWG website: http://www.ewg.org/guides/subcategories/25-HandWashingDetergent 4 have ‘A’ rankings.

Hi,
Which app did you mention that you liked for scanning products? I had never heard of it before.
Thanks!

It was the Environmental Working Group – they provide a lot of great resources: http://www.ewg.org/
