For as long as she can remember, she has loved books and music and has written numerous short stories, poems and songs. Cooking became one of her passions when she realized it was a necessary skill to have in order to keep her family healthy. She still thinks being a librarian or a teacher would be one of the best jobs in the world, second only to being a mom of course. The Nourishing Traditions Cookbook for Children is her first book.

Cooking the Nourishing Traditions way means following the wisdom of our ancestors, whose food ways were mindful of the earth, the animals and their own bodies. It means avoiding industrial processed foods (and dietary advice that promotes these foods) and instead, selecting natural, nutrient-dense foods.

Inside this book, you will find an entire chapter devoted to butter! Eggs, raw milk, meats, broth, fermented foods, whole grains and vegetables all take their turn in the spotlight. Children learn why these foods are good for them and how the way food is grown, processed and prepared can either help or hurt us. Over one hundred recipes invite children into the kitchen to learn preparation of nourishing meals, snacks and treats.

Colorfully illustrated, The Nourishing Traditions Cookbook for Children describes the principles of good nutrition in a simple language that children can understand. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, nannies, teachers and anyone involved in a young person’s life can use this book to successfully equip children with the skills and wisdom they need to nourish themselves and–one day soon–their own families.

At first I thought the book was going to be recipes for feeding kids… which would be great too! But then I realized it is a KIDS book for them to look at and cook from! I get excited thinking that my kids can take more ownership of their eating and learn traditional methods. It’s one thing to tell them about it, and a whole other thing for them to do it and have their own book about it! Very excited about this!

I recently purchased Nourishing Traditions, Nourishing Broths and the book about Baby Care… I have also just started reading Weston Price’s book. The information is life changing, and we are getting used to a different way of eating. My 4 little children love to be in the kitchen and are constantly wanting to help me cook. We are expecting number 5 and homeschool as well. My children would be thrilled to have a cookbook for themselves that we could make food out of! I love instilling in them my love for cooking and this seems like the perfect book! 🙂

She loves cooking in the kitchen with me and I would love for her to have her own cookbook that we can use together while she learns to take responsibility for her health. Even at such a young age I think it’s important to feel a sense of responsibility over something as complex as our health. Plus it will be so fun and she will just love having her own cookbook with her name in it and all!! Thank you!!

The most beneficial and enduring gift my mom ever gave me was an appreciation for the flavors of whole foods, as well as the skill set to prepare foods from scratch. These gifts have made my transition to fully embracing and making traditionally prepared foods in my own kitchen so much easier. This is no small thing! My husband was raised on mostly processed foods, and has struggled to develop an appreciation for the array of flavors that traditionally prepared foods have to offer. What excites me most about “The Nourishing Traditions Cookbook for Children” is its kid friendly, integrated approach to teaching children to both prepare and develop a passion for traditional foods, while simultaneously bringing the whole family together. My three children love to help me in the kitchen, but we have never found a cookbook that meets these important criteria. If we were blessed to have “The Nourishing Traditions Cookbook for Children” as part of our home library, I know my children (especially my 9 year old daughter) would spend hours pouring over the book and begging me to cook with them….which we would do! Eating traditional foods has greatly improved our health, and I want my children to continue this tradition in their own homes.

I have two daughters ages 9 and 11 and they are both very interested in cooking and in finding recipes online (especially desserts, I have to admit, but that’s a start). They are health conscious so they try to replace ingredients to use real food in the recipes and this book is going to be great because I like to encourage them to learn more about real food. They will have fun learning and cooking real food having their own recipe book with pictures and easy to follow recipes.

I’m thrilled about this book! We love on a small farm and seek to prepare our foods as traditionally as possible. And NT has been an important part of that. But to have such a wonderful tool to help my boys embrace the preparation for themselves will be invaluable. (And as for books and libraries…I turned my collection of books into a private lending library for homeschool families. I’m able to feed my children’s bodies with living foods and feed their minds with living books.). ????

At this day and age, conscious nutrition is probably the most important decision to make in order to take control of our health and wellbeing…and also, to aid us in being aware of the forces that -in many ways- corner us to eating what we don’t need (and should even avoid).
A guide which gives us hope and great fun tools to convey that to our younger generations…invaluable. Thanks to all involved for your vision and effort!!!

I have been learning about nutrition on and off for over a decade. Very big was my shock to find out in the past two years, that (almost) everything I thought I knew was wrong. Ever since I have been trying to move my family more towards a traditional diet. For kids that kind of change can be especially hard after eating junk “food” on a regular basis. So I really appreciate that Suzanne took the time to write this cookbook for children. I am looking forward to being able to cook traditional food with my children that they actually enjoy.

There’s so much I’m still learning and I am constantly looking for healthy recipes for my littles. This would be a huge help in making nutritious foods for/with them 🙂

I’d love to use this to teach this to the kids I work with, teaching them how to be excited and interested in healthy foods that they can help make.

I have 7 children ages 14 down to 14 months; Plus #8 due in December! Four of my kiddos love to cook and they are the primary reason we joined Traditional Cooking School this year. We’ve really enjoyed being members and hope to renew for the next school year. Susanne’s book has been in my Amazon cart since I first saw it last April.. But free is better 🙂

I have been working on learning how to cook this way for a year, and find my two boys (10 and 5) very eager to eat everything I’ve tried. My 10 year old son loves to cook and try things. This book would be a great help to us as we try to overcome some food issues and eczema, etc.

Thank you so much, Suzanne and Wardeh!! I want to make sure that my boys can cook well for themselves by the time they leave home. Both are a little intimidated by recipes. I think the illustrations will definitely take the edge off. 🙂

I am so excited about this book! My NT is feathered, stained and has pages coming out. I am excited to have nutrition tips and recipes that capture the attention of my 9 year old who loves to cook.

I have Nourishing Traditions and am slowly learning from it and love it! I have two daughters who both like to cook and I would love to bless them with the kids version of Nourishing Traditions. We also homeschool, so this would make a great addition to our “living books”. Thanks for the gracious opportunity to have one.

What a great idea! I still find the original Nourishing Traditions a bit intimidating – I would love to have a kids version. Plus, my kids are getting to the age where they WANT to be in the kitchen cooking, but I don’t really feel competent to teach them! Thank you for making this available!

Since my daughter received Paula Deen’s cookbook for children 2 years ago she loves looking at the pictures of the ingredients and picking out a recipe to try. Then of course we see how we have to substitute ingredients and cooking steps to make it nourishing. While its been a great learning experience for her, this is just the book I have been waiting for! I would love for her to see that she can have the same fun with healthy recipes.

My children love perusing cookbooks, so it would be so amazing if they could peruse the children’s equivalent of my favorite cookbook! What a wonderful idea and accomplishment!

All the previous comments are old, but I just got this email. I have my 3yr old granddaughter, and thought that perhaps this can help me in raising a child who is not afraid to use the kitchen.

I have 8 children ages 4-18 and would love for them to learn to cook healthy and better understand the why of it. My 9 year old daughter is suffering from some very serious medical struggles, so it is even more important to me that we eat healthy.

This book is so wonderful! My 9 year old daughter has deepened her love for cooking and increased her knowledge of the “why” in Traditional Cooking (I even overhear her sharing her tips with friends!). It’s money well spent and even better for getting kids involved in the kitchen. The recipes are illustrated wonderfully and very easy for kids to follow.
