Mincemeat pies are little pies filled with “mincemeat” — a mixture of meat, dried fruit, spices, and some type of vinegar, wine, or (frequently) brandy.
Nowadays, mincemeat pies are more fruit and spices than actual meat. This has led to their being more of a dessert than main dish. Traditionally, however, they came about as a way to preserve meat without salting or smoking. Jaclyn takes us back to the traditional mincemeat pie in this recipe — a nourishing, holiday main dish straight from her family’s table!
Finally, this simple (use your crockpot!) recipe for sweet and savory mincemeat pie has oh-so-nourishing ingredients — such as meat, fruit, healthy fats, and a grain-free crust. It’s absolutely delicious, too!

Mincemeat Pie {GAPS Approved}
Ingredients
For the mincemeat:
- 1 pound skirt steak
- 2 cups apples peeled and diced
- 1 cup apple juice organic or fresh-pressed
- 1 cup dried currants
- 1/2 cup raisins
- 1/2 cup beef tallow cold, cut into small chunks
- 2 cloves garlic pressed
- 1 teaspoon ground allspice
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
For the crust:
- 2 cups crispy cashews
- 2 organic or pastured eggs
- 2 tablespoons lard
- 2 tablespoons coconut flour
Instructions
To make the mincemeat:

Cut the skirt steak into several large pieces.

Then combine skirt steak, apple, apple juice, dried currants, raisins, beef tallow, garlic, allspice, cinnamon, salt, and pepper in a crockpot insert or Dutch oven.

Stir.

Next, place crockpot on low heat, or turn oven on to 200 degrees Fahrenheit, for 6 hours.

Turn crockpot or oven off.

Then transfer steak to a cutting board.

Set remaining fruit mixture aside.

Mince the meat by first shredding it with 2 forks, then cutting it into small pieces with a sharp knife.

Return the meat to the fruit mixture.

Then stir to combine.
To make the crust:

Place cashews in high-powered blender.

Next, blend on medium until cashews are dry and crumbly.

Add lard and eggs.
-
Process on medium until a sticky dough forms.
-
Then transfer to a mixing bowl.

Add coconut flour.
-
Stir to create a drier, more-workable dough.
To make the pies:
-
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Then divide dough into 8 equal parts.

Place 4 on a large sheet of parchment paper.
-
Press into circles with the heel of your hand.
-
Next, add another piece of parchment paper over the top of the dough circles.

Use a rolling pin to roll out each dough circle to about a 1/4 inch thick.

Then carefully remove the top piece of parchment paper.

Scoop about 1/2 cup mincemeat mixture into the center of each dough circle.

Using a spatula, gently fold the edges of the circle over until there is a pocket all the way around the mincemeat.

Next, turn a large cookie sheet upside down, then carefully slide the parchment paper onto the backside of the cookie sheet.

Repeat with remaining 4 balls of dough and remaining mincemeat.

Then, using a pastry brush, brush the edges of dough with the leftover juice from the mincemeat mixture.

Bake for 15 to 20 minutes.

Finally, cool before serving. Enjoy!

We checked with Jaclyn, the recipe author, on this. Here are her thoughts: “Extra chopped apples may work, as well as pine nuts or other chopped crispy nuts, OR white navy beans. Of course, I haven’t tried any of these options. :)”

Could I use any crust recipe (if I can find one)? Not only are we GF, but my son is allergic to eggs, coconut, and nuts.

NNnnnoooo you dont really put meat in your mincepies do you ? Never in all my days have I heard of that ! If you come to the UK dont ever try the micepies (apart from they are made of crud) you will not find a scrap of meat in them !
I am looking forward to trying the crust though I already use a very similar filling so I know thats good in fact just finished a almond slice with mincemeat filling yum.

Sounds yummy! Could this be made into a regular single pie? If so, would it need a top crust in order not to scorch the filling?
