Homemade Essential Oil Roll-On Headache Stick | When I paid $9 for an essential oil "migraine stick" the other day, I knew I could save a bundle by making my own! Make this DIY Essential Oil Roll-On Headache Stick to get quick, natural relief from migraines and tension headaches! Video instructions included! | TraditionalCookingSchool.com

Ouch! $9???

That’s what I paid for an essential oil “migraine stick” the other day.

It really works so I want to keep using it… but I don’t want to spend $9 every time I need a new one!

Guess what’s in it? Essential oils in a carrier oil.

Sounds easy enough… so let’s make one!

And psst…. we’re going to save a bundle! By my calculations, even including the investment of the roll-on bottle, this homemade headache stick costs only $3! And only $2 if you already own the roll-on bottle.

The print recipe is just below the video. 🙂

Essential Oil Roll-On Headache Stick

Save money making your own headache roll-on stick! Only two ingredients and it really works.

Course Household & Health
Author Wardee Harmon

Ingredients

  • 10 mL roll-on bottle *empty
  • 10 to 30 drops peppermint essential oil or a combination of peppermint and lavender in equal parts
  • carrier oil **of choice

Instructions

  1. Put essential oil(s) in the roll-on bottle.

  2. Add a carrier oil to the shoulder of the jar (don't overfill).

  3. Put the roll-on top in place -- it helps to press it in with a towel, then screw the cap on top to get it all the way on.

  4. Tip upside down a few times to mix.

Recipe Notes

  • To use: roll on temples or other pressure points, then massage in to relieve pain.
  • About the concentration: In the video I show using 30 drops of essential oil; since then I modified the concentration to 10 drops. Check out this comment where Nicola shares more about the lower concentration.
  • *Get empty roll-on bottles here.
  • **Carrier oil of choice such as avocado oil, jojoba oil, or fractionated coconut oil

These are really, really good essential oils! Find out more about their quality and processes here.

You know what else I love? Each bottle has a hand-written batch number on it (they make small quality batches) and the cute recyclable box… you’ll appreciate these extra details, too, when your oils arrive!

    Hi Wardee,
I have been using those same sticks for a few years now. I apply to the back of my neck and it relieves my headaches along with my aching neck. I have purchased the Isopropyl Myristate that “they” use (so it does not leave an oily feel) but I have not put it together yet because I was uncertain of the amount of essential oils to use. Your recipe gave me what I needed. Thank You. Also there are handy tools out there for getting the roller caps on and off really easy. These are what I purchased and they work great. https://www.amazon.com/Essential-Bottle-Opener-Golden-Silver/dp/B01ILPX4O4/ref=lp_13185675011_1_9_a_it?srs=13185675011&ie=UTF8&qid=1495038128&sr=8-9
Thanks again Wardee for all that you do.

It’s a great idea to make your own. I wanted to share what I have learned in my studies with Certified Aromatherapists. Essential oils are extremely concentrated and often work well at very low concentrations. Based on my training in aromatherapy, I would recommend a lower concentration of essential oil. 30 drops in 10ml of carrier oil is about a 15% concentration of essential oils. Peppermint is recommended at a maximum strength of 1% when used topically because of its potential for skin irritation, which would be about 2 drops in 10ml. 5% would be a good overall maximum, so that means your total drops of essential oils (peppermint + lavender) would be around 10 drops in 10ml of carrier oil. Using high concentrations of essential oils can put you at risk of sensitization and is not usually necessary.

Thank you muchly! I have 5 ml (actually they could be 10 ml) rollon bottles on hand so I used 5 qtts (drops) of Lavender and 2 qtts of Peppermint. I also prefer apricot kernel carrier oil and filled the bottle with it. I will make a few more for gifts and travel.

addendum to the above Carol with no picture – my roller bottles are only 3 ml so 5 drops (qtts) of Lavender 2 drops of peppermint and fill with Apricot kernel oil or carrier oil of choice. It is a very small bottle only about 1 inch tall including the lid and I generally use them for little gift items.

So I’m new to this and didn’t read the comments about dilutions until after i made recipe as stated in a 10 mL roller bottle. Soooo, i have way too much essential oil for this roller bottle it sounds like.

Can someone help me decide best way to dilute from here? Should i spread it out over other 10 mL bottles? If so how many?

I made for someone who constantly has headaches at work so I don’t want to make things worse lol.

    Thanks for any help!!

    Emily

      Hi Emily,

Yes, you can pour out what you put in the roller bottle into a larger vessel and dilute it with more carrier oil.

Depending on how many drop you used initially will determine how much you’ll need to dilute and how many bottles you’ll end up with.

      Here’s a good dilution chart: http://www.usingeossafely.com/diluting-essential-oils-safely-safe-dilution-guidelines-for-all-ages/
