Creamy, sweet, and gently spiced, this easy turmeric latte recipe with ginger, cinnamon, and coconut milk is the perfect cozy drink for bedtime or chilly days! Similar to golden milk, you’ll love its anti-inflammatory, digestive, and immune-boosting benefits!
Is it still bitterly cold outside where you live?
It is here, so I’m creating allllll the warm drinks like elderberry tea and cranberry wassail to help me feel cozy. And this warming turmeric ginger latte is no exception!
The perfect healthy drink, a turmeric ginger latte is anti-inflammatory and filled with lots of nourishing ingredients.
Plus, it’s dairy-free, vegan, Paleo, and even Whole30 friendly!
Is this turmeric ginger latte similar to golden milk?
This recipe is really similar to golden milk, or turmeric tea.
All golden milk recipes obviously use milk as the base, usually non-dairy milk.
This latte uses a similar approach, with an extra helping of yummy ginger and dates used to sweeten. We are using coconut milk (I love easy homemade coconut milk for this!) since it pairs so nicely with the spices.
You could also use homemade almond milk, cashew milk, or other plant milks. Or, raw cow’s milk is a great option too!
Another difference between golden milk and this recipe is that we are adding ginger, which has so many health benefits and melds so nicely with turmeric.
Also, most golden milk recipes sweeten with honey, but this latte uses dates as the sweetener which is perfect for any Whole30 folks out there!
And if you’re wondering “What does a golden milk latte taste like?” let me assure you. It’s delicious!
A creamy, sweet concoction with a gently spiced flavor. The ginger also balances out the turmeric so it isn’t too overpowering.
What are the benefits of turmeric and ginger?
If you’re unfamiliar with turmeric, it’s a traditional Indian spice and is known the world over as being one of the healthiest spices to consume regularly.
The active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, is highly anti-inflammatory and is shown to benefit brain and heart health, boost the immune system, improve arthritis, help prevent some cancers, and even aid in weight loss (source)! Learn more about the benefits of curcumin here.
Ginger not only has an amazing flavor, but did you know that turmeric and ginger are actually relatives in the plant kingdom? It is wonderful for digestion and nausea reduction, a great remedy for the common cold, and helps regulate blood sugar (source).
The Perfect Dairy-Free & Sugar-Free Coffee Alternative
One reason I love this drink so much is that it’s a great coffee alternative, giving natural energy without the caffeine crash. The healthy fats in coconut milk, natural sugar from dates, and healing spices all combine to help you feel really good — naturally!
This latte only takes a few minutes to make (about the same amount of time as a cup of coffee), so why not try this instead the next time you’re craving a mid-afternoon pick-me-up?
How To Make A Turmeric Latte With Ginger
This latte recipe is so easy to make, it only takes about 5 minutes!
Simply add your milk of choice (I’m using coconut milk) to a small saucepan on medium heat.
Also add the turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, vanilla, pinch of black pepper (if using), and a date. You need only one large date per serving since they’re super sweet.
I’m very blessed to know a farmer nearby who grows and harvests fresh turmeric root that I buy at a local farmer’s market!
Most grocery stores also sell fresh turmeric which is bright orange in color. This is obviously the best and most potent option, but if you don’t have any, turmeric powder works great too.
I recommend using freshly grated ginger root, as well. The flavor and benefits are unsurpassed!
In a pinch, you can use ginger powder.
Heat your concoction for several minutes until simmering, stirring occasionally. Once it’s hot, add everything to a heat-safe, high-powered blender such as the Vitamix.
Blend on high to emulsify to the date, distribute its sweetness thoroughly, and combine all your spices. It also adds a nice frothiness to your latte.
If you want to get extra-fancy, you can even froth your latte with a milk frother. Luxe!
Pour into a large mug and serve. Recipe is easily multiplied for sharing with friends.
Tips For Making The Best Turmeric Ginger Latte
To add a little ‘extra’ to your latte, try these tips:
- Sprinkle with special toppings like cinnamon or dried rose petals
- It might change the flavor a bit, but adding a pinch of black pepper to the turmeric has been shown to increase its effectiveness up to 1000 times. You can even find turmeric and black pepper spice blends which make this even easier. This is totally optional.
- If you prefer, you can use a natural sweetener like raw honey or maple syrup to sweeten instead of dates.
- Use a small milk frother to create an indulgent frothy latte.
How To Make A Turmeric Latte Make-Ahead Dry Mix
If you enjoy turmeric lattes so much (like me) and want an even quicker way to whip them up on-the-go, here’s a great idea.
Grab some coconut milk powder — make sure it’s additive-free like this one.
Blend together the coconut milk powder with turmeric powder, ginger powder, cinnamon, some sea salt, and a bit of black pepper (optional).
Store in an air-tight container.
When you’re ready to use, simply add 2 tablespoons of the mix to 8 ounces hot water. Add a sweetener of your choice, stir, and froth with a milk frother if desired.
