Vanilla Yogurt
Delicious alone or paired with fresh fruit, this is a classic! Makes two 1/2-cup servings. Learn how to make yogurt in our Cultured Dairy eCourse.
Ingredients
- 1 cup plain yogurt
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- raw honey or maple syrup*, to taste
Instructions

Mix together all ingredients.

Fruit-on-the-Bottom Yogurt
In love with this stir-in style yogurt? It's easy to make this at home with your own homemade jam. Makes two 1/2-cup servings. Learn how to make yogurt in our Cultured Dairy eCourse.
Ingredients
- 1 cup plain yogurt
- 3 tablespoons jam
Instructions

Place jam in the bottom of a bowl or Mason jar.

Layer the yogurt on top.

Pumpkin Yogurt

- 1/2 cup plain yogurt
- 1/2 cup pumpkin puree not pumpkin pie filling
- 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- raw honey or maple syrup*, to taste

- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon raw honey or maple syrup*, or to taste

Apple Pie Yogurt
This is a nice treat on a crisp fall morning! Makes two 1/2-cup servings. Learn how to make yogurt in our Cultured Dairy eCourse.
Ingredients
- 1 cup plain yogurt
- 1/2 cup apples peeled and chopped
- 1 tablespoon pure water
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon cloves
- raw honey or maple syrup, to taste
- small handful of raisins optional
Instructions

Combine the apples, water, and spices in a pan and heat until the apples are softened.

Cool.

Stir cooled apples into the yogurt.

Ginger Pear Yogurt
Ingredients
- 1 cup plain yogurt
- 1/2 cup pear fresh, chopped
- 1/2 tablespoon ginger freshly grated
- raw honey or maple syrup*, to taste
- sprinkle of ground cinnamon

Maple Walnut Yogurt
Ingredients
- 1 cup plain yogurt
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup or to taste
- 2 tablespoons walnuts
- 2 tablespoons raisins

Key Lime Pie/Lemon/Orange Yogurt
Ingredients
- 1 cup plain yogurt
- 2 tablespoons grated lime or lemon or orange zest
- 1 tablespoon lime or lemon or orange juice
- raw honey or maple syrup*, to taste

A Few Notes
These recipes are easily doubled or tripled for bigger batches.
Honey and maple syrup are always added to taste. If you’re unsure, start with a teaspoon and add more if needed.
For a no-sugar option, omit the sweetener altogether or experiment with stevia.

I was a few days out of the hospital (and a week, post-appendectomy) when it was my son’s birthday, for which he requested banana splits. I was eating mostly yogurt, because I could tolerate it, and to combat the effects of all the antibiotics. I dearly wanted to join in with the birthday treat, so added chopped banana, chopped nuts, and unsweetened coconut to my yogurt, and it’s been such a nice change of pace to have the crunch and extra nutritional benefits. Sometimes I leave out the banana, but then it needs some raw honey.

I simmer a bag of frozen mixed berries or blueberries with a little honey to make a thick syrup. Of course, I have some in yogurt or on pancakes while it is fresh and warm. But then we freeze the rest in ice cube trays with flower, star and heart shapes. Store in a freezer bag. Then when you want berry yogurt, just pop one on top. It defrosts pretty quickly.

I was wondering if you have a homemade yogurt recipe. I haven’t found a source of raw milk in my area yet as it’s basically black market here but I can get non homoginized, pasturized milk from grass feed cows at my co-op. Is it possible to add a starter to this to make my own yogurt and what are the best ways of doing this?

You have to boil the milk first to make yogurt so it won’t be raw once it’s done anyways. The internet is full of recipes. I make mine in my instant pot, but there are lots of recipes where you put it in a heated, and then turned off oven.

These sound great! I make a fresh fruit compote by simmering blueberries on the stove and adding some chia seeds to thicken it. My kids love this drizzled on top of yogurt.

Is it possible to sweeten my yogurt as I’m making it? When I try to add the jam, honey, etc to my plain yogurt it clumps up and doesn’t look great (but it does taste great).

Hi Beverly, yes you can sweeten your yogurt after it’s been cultured. If you add sweetener while you are culturing the yogurt it may interfere with the culturing process.

I have had great luck adding extracts during the yogurt fermenting period. I have strawberry extract, orange extract, vanilla extract, and lemon extract. Also a tablespoon of white sugar or stevia sweetener per cup of milk.
I didn’t get much success with fruit during the fermentation so I stopped trying and save that for the end.
The worst that will happen is it will not set and you throw it away and try again.

No need to throw it out….just throw it in a blender with fruit and drink as a smoothie.
