You’re doing everything right…
…diet, rest, reducing toxins…
…and yet you still have vitamin or mineral deficiencies.
So, should you take a multi-vitamin OR individual vitamins/minerals?
Well, the answer depends… (doesn’t it always??)
Yet, I do have some general guidelines to help you, plus I’m sharing what I do.

The Question: Should You Take A Multi-Vitamin Or Individual Vitamins & Supplements To Meet Nutritional Deficiencies?
Danielle T. asked:
Is it sufficient to take a multivitamin or is it better dial in on specific nutrients that you need and take multiple, individual supplements?
My Answer
First, I have to say…
We are what we eat. If we eat healthy, we increase our health. If we eat poorly, our health suffers. If we do everything else right (sleep and exercise and reduce stress) yet still eat poorly, we won’t attain the health we could have. Food is utterly redemptive and healing!
So, it’s important to begin my answer today by saying this: Supplements are not the same as food. You can’t out-supplement a poor diet.
Sure, there is a time and place for supplements — like when we have an elevated need for a certain nutrient (such as iron or magnesium).
However, the more we can meet our nutrition needs through real, whole foods, the better off we’ll be.
Whole foods contain much more than any single nutrient we’re after. Often, whole foods contain hundreds more nutrients (some we haven’t even identified!) that all work together to help us better assimilate their nutrition. When we isolate to make supplements, we lose that synergy.
I always prefer to seek out whole foods first, and then supplement where a deficit exists. And we do Traditional Cooking here, which takes extra care (but not with extra time if you’re already cooking with whole foods) to prepare foods so they are as nutritious and digestible as possible… If you’d like an intro to Traditional Cooking, make sure to sign up for our FREE Traditional Cooking Video Series.
Having said that… our soils are so depleted and our foods are not as nutrient-dense as they used to be. It’s actually hard to get all our nutrients from foods.
So…
Many of us reach the point where we find that we have vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
I don’t see anything wrong with choosing a good multi-vitamin and taking it to cover all the bases. We no longer do this due to ingesting vitamins or minerals we don’t need more of, such as Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, or copper; we only take individual amounts of what we need (primarily only minerals).
However, if you have a severe deficiency, a multi-vitamin usually won’t give you enough of what you need. That’s where the individual supplements come in. I take magnesium and iron. As well as cod liver oil for Vitamin D3. (We use a sunlamp or the sun for our Vitamin D now!)
Bottom Line
It’s hard for me to give a “do this” answer for everyone because every situation is a little different. You really can’t make a confident decision about what you should do without knowing what your specific deficiencies are.
Start with that and work up.
Here are two possible scenarios and what you might consider doing:
- You have severe deficiencies and don’t feel well — Eat well, rest well, drink pure water and consider taking
a multi-vitamin* to cover the bases as well asindividual supplements to work on more extreme deficiencies. - You feel generally well but maybe not as well as you could — Eat well, rest well, drink pure water
and consider taking a multi-vitamin* to cover the bases, and then see how you feel. If further deficiencies are uncovered in the future, add supplementation (or foods) for those.

Some people have food intolerance(s) that rule out certain formulations. So then they’re having to take a special formula but it’s missing something another one has, so they have to take something else in addition to fill the gap.

I do take supplements, but how can I know if they have everything the label tells me. In the past I have taken different supplements and they didn’t help a bit. I changed brands and noticed some difference. How can I tell by the label if they are really what they claim. I would also like to take a multi vitamin but have no idea of what to buy.

Hi Ruth,
Quality can vary from brand to brand. It is hard to know! Wardee recommends only brands she has researched and feels good using herself. 🙂 Seeking Health Optimal Multi-Vitamin is one she likes: http://amzn.to/2wUTLlu

I used to take a multivitamin. But now I have been taking Vital Proteins Beef Liver capsules for my multivitamin and filling in with what’s not covered like: D3, fish oils, etc. It seems to be working for me.

Hello! I have been researching the best multivitamins for my family. I followed the link you provided for the Seeking Heath multi and was really surprised to see a Prop 65 warning on the bottle. Can you help me understand why this would be there? Thanks for your time.
Sonya Hemmings says
Hi, Brandi:
It’s difficult to know which ingredient(s) might be triggering the Prop 65 warning, as the current list of items has now grown to more than 800. Here’s a link that explains Prop 65 in-depth: https://oehha.ca.gov/proposition-65/general-info/proposition-65-plain-language. The best idea is to contact the manufacturer and ask which ingredient(s) might be of concern, and then make your own informed decision about whether those ingredients are actually a problem for your own health. —Sonya, TCS Customer Success Team

Thank you for your article about supplements. I take a fat-soluble Vit. C supplement daily. At the age of 65, I discovered that my body did a very poor job of absorbing it. C. This problem resulted in terrible teeth and 8 root canals in 10 years. 6 crowns, which all feel out because my teeth are loose in my jaw. I was overweight and very tired, and I was a constant snacker. Usually going for orange juice or peanut butter. I felt as if my body was constantly asking for something, so I ate and gained weight.
When I found out about the lack of vitamin C, I thought I was going to be sick and tired for the rest of my life. Because as you know, Vit C is a water-soluble vit. I found the fat-soluble version, and “WOW,” what a difference! I lost 40 lbs; I stop snacking or worrying about what I could eat to get some energy. So yes, some of us do need additional help. Plus we lived in an area where the soil is sadly lacking, yet another reason.
