“Is there anything else you could use other than that awful cooking spray?” asked John when he saw the video recipe for our keto lemon-poppyseed bundt cake.
Well, it turns out the cooking spray being used in that video is actually a pretty healthy one… because the product contains only oil. No other ingredients, like those other brands, some of which are just not good for us.
So you can definitely find a healthy cooking oil spray in stores (and I’ll tell you my favorite brand below)… yet what if we went one step further?
You see, those are expensive, so it’s even better to make your own!

The Question: What Else Can I Use Other Than That Awful Cooking Spray?
John P. asked:
Is there anything else you could use other than that awful cooking spray?
Then after hearing there are healthier ones to buy, such as avocado oil only sprays…
Wardee, I was unaware it was avocado spray. The label is hidden under the person’s hand. Now, where do you buy avocado cooking spray? The only spray stuff I have ever seen is that awful stuff ‘Pam’ that I use on my snow blower so it throws near slush.
John, I don’t understand the last part… how Pam helps you with your snow blower but I CAN tell you where to buy healthy cooking spray … and even better, how to save money by making your own!
Where To Buy Healthy Cooking Oil Spray
If you look carefully at the ingredients lists, you’ll find a few sprays that contain only oil and no other ingredients. Examples are the Chosen Foods avocado oil spray that’s pictured or the Field Day coconut oil spray I had with me during this episode.
You can find these made with other cooking oils, too, like coconut and olive.
The Chosen Foods avocado oil spray oil is the one I used to buy. I got it at Costco and like it very much.
I would keep buying it, except it gets costly over time (you go through the cans quickly if you’re baking a lot), so I wanted to find a more economical solution.
And that’s how I stumbled onto…
Homemade Cooking Oil Spray Using An Oil Mister!
…using an oil mister such as as this one from The Fine Life. I absolutely LOVE it!
Yes, the Fine Life Olive Oil Mister is made with BPA-free materials. 🙂
How To Fill And Use The Oil Mister
It’s simple!
- Add oil to the fill line. (I use avocado oil… much cheaper this way than in a can!)
- Screw the spray cap lid on.
- Then use the additional lid as a pump to pressurize the chamber. Remove the pump lid.
- Spray. A wonderful fine mist comes out!
- Repeat pumping as needed. Store with pump lid on.
I spray pans directly or I spray on top of parchment paper, too… for instance, every time I make these keto rolls!
By the way, this can be healthier, too! Because you can use organic oils in your homemade mister instead of whatever oil is in the cans — even if it’s an oil-only ingredient list!
What About Price?
The oil mister costs about $26. That’s the equivalent of about 5 cans of the good-quality and healthy avocado oil cooking spray.
Not counting cooking oil, if you use a can of spray every month (I did for sure)… it takes only a bit over 5 months to pay for your oil mister. If you say 6 months, then you’ve accounted for the oil, too. Just a rough estimate but one that works!
So after the first 6 months, you’re only paying for the cooking oil from then on out. And with the tiny amounts used in the oil mister, it’s not very expensive at all! Much less expensive than buying the cans, for sure!
So… the oil mister is healthier and saves money… quite quickly!
What About Clogging?
I used a similar vessel years ago that got clogged a lot and I couldn’t clean it well enough to prevent the clogging. Within a few months, it was useless.
This oil mister, however, is not getting clogged at all. It’s working great!
However, I’m doing what I can to prevent clogs, by washing out between oil refills using these steps:
- Take apart the oil mister and wash the parts in soapy water as best I can.
- Use a brush to really clean out the sprayer with soap.
- Rinse all parts well. Let air dry.
Now it’s all clean and I refill the mister with oil and it’s good to go again.
The thing with this and other gadgets is… they require upkeep. This upkeep is simple and keeps it clog-free so it’s worth doing to prevent issues!

Wardee,
You wrote; John, I don’t understand the last part… how Pam helps you with your snow blower.
Before it gets really cold outside, be sure to buy two lg cans of Pam cooking spray. That part of the snow blower where the snow is scooped up gets sprayed with the Pam, as it actually is a silicone that hardens to a smooth surface to encourage slippage. After first spraying, let dry. Then add an additional layer or two. It should last all winter so in spring & there is slush it should still pick it up for removal. It is also good for a plow as it prevents clogging.
Linda says
It also works on your snow shovels to keep the snow sliding off!
Wardee Harmon says
Wow, John, what a great use for Pam! 🙂 Thank you for explaining. 🙂

What is your favorite oil when “greasing” a pan? Sometimes when I use coconut oil, things still seem to stick. And yes, I have a similar mister that I refill myself – love it!
Danielle says
Hi Adrianne,
Wardee uses avocado oil in her sprayer.

I had a similar mister years ago and gave up on it. But I just recently got the Evo Oil Sprayer Bottle, Non-Aerosol for Olive Oil and Cooking Oils, Stainless Steel, 16-ounce Capacity same price as your mister on Amazon. You don’t have to pump it and it’s not as fine a mist but it works just as well. Since I don’t have it long enough yet to know if it’ll clog. I use it to spray food before crisping in. For my pans I bought a bottle with brush and use that to lightly oil my pans, it’s actually a set made for honey and syrup but I use the brush one for oil Honey/Syrup Jar (250ml) w/ Combination Dipper/Spoon & Lid Glass – Wide Mouth for Mess-free & Easy Dispensing, 8oz Capacity (Set of 2)

Great idea – thanks for sharing! I’m thinking it would also be great for misting healthy oil onto freshly made organic popcorn, making it tastier & helping the himalayan salt (or Real salt) to stick!
Ellie says
What kind of brush do you use to clean the sprayer before refilling? Do toy mean you clean just at the sprayer opening or what about the “stem”? Should one try to clean it with maybe a pipe cleaner?
In the past I had a sprayer from Pampered chef and it did clog and become unusable I think before using the oil initially placed in the bottle.
Thanks for sharing your insights!
Ellie
Peggy says
Hi, Ellie,
Wardee has some very thin bottle brushes that she uses to clean out all the nooks and crannies. She does go up the stem as far as she can. She also disassembles as much as possible and brushes everything with soapy water and run hot water through it.

Is avacado oil a heart healthy oil?
Does it have a strong flavor that affects the taste of what you cook in it?
Is it useful for making mayonaise?
Adrianne says
Kathy, I love avocado oil! It’s so very mild, basically no flavor at all. I use it in some of my homemade dressings, so I’m sure it would be good for mayo. I also use it in place of canola or vegetable oil in recipes. 🙂
Vicki Henry says
Hi Kathy,
I love avocado oil. It has a mild flavor and its great in baked goods. I prefer it in mayo rather than olive oil.
We have a blog post on the benefits of avocado oil here: https://traditionalcookingschool.com/health-and-nutrition/avocado-oil-the-new-fat-in-the-real-food-kitchen/

in my 40 some years of cooking I had ONE oil spray, yes it was probably pam. I hated it so much that I never got another; when ever I sprayed anything all the surrounding had a fine oil film as well! I grease my baking pans with my butter wrappers or just 3 fingers, easiest! If I grease with coconut oil I wipe my fingers on my arm and rub the remainder into my skin, double effective 🙂 Everything else can get a good portion of oil, olive oil is healthy why be stingy? Though that little mister looks quite nice, but I determined that I really don’t need one – I said that about the instant pot as well, in the mean time I really would like a larger pressure cooker and am slowly getting friendly with possibly owning one 🙂
Linda says
LOL. My daughter and I do the same thing with the excess coconut oil when coating the pans. It is great for your skin.

Your link just gets us to a Cuisinart mister at Home Depot. It’s out of stock and looks nothing like the one you are using in your video…
Danielle says
Hi, Christine.
The one Wardee used in the video is no longer available and it looks like the one from Home Depot is now discontinued. I’ve been using this one from Pampered Chef and I really like it! (I actually have three): https://www.pamperedchef.com/pws/connieftate/shop/Sale/Kitchen+Spritzer/2733
