It’s beginning to smell a lot like Christmas… everywhere you go!
Trouble is, those air fresheners and conventional candles made from paraffin fill our air with toxic chemicals that are as dangerous as second-hand smoke… and some compounds that are identified as carcinogens!
To me, one of the most dangerous things they do is release yet more xenoestrogens into our environment. We talked more about the damage xenoestrogens can do here. Basically, they wreak havoc on the hormones of men, women, and children. It’s really, really sad, and I think we should do everything possible to minimize our exposure to these endocrine disruptors.
So… instead of using conventional candles (or air fresheners), fill your house with Christmas cheer using these simple and lovely wintertime essential oil diffuser blends!
In today’s #AskWardee, I’ll share some of my favorite Christmas and wintertime essential oil diffuser blends. Plus, I’ll show you how you can easily make your own recipes without wasting a ton of precious essential oils in the process.
And, I’ll give you a non-toxic alternative to paraffin candles… because you still want candles on your dinner table, right? 😉

Q: What Can I Use Instead Of Toxic Candles To Make My Home Smell Like Christmas?
Martha T. asked:
I just found out how bad candles and air fresheners are. But, I love how they make my house smell. What can I use instead that’s non-toxic and still smells really good? Thank you!
Martha, I have just the answer for you… essential oil diffuser blends!
Combine a few essential oils in a diffuser and let it distribute the wonderful combination of aromas throughout your house.
Perhaps the most wonderful part of using essential oils this way is that it’s more than just a neutral, safe option to conventional candles… they’re actually good for you!
Because essentials oils powerfully strengthen the immune system; clean and disinfect the home; improve mood, focus, and energy; and many other powerful properties, too!
To answer your question, first I’m going to share my favorite blends with you. Then, I’m going to show you how to easily come up with your own without wasting a ton of precious essential oils experimenting. Plus, because we all still want to use candles, I’ll introduce you to non-toxic candles, too!
Christmas & Wintertime Essential Oil Diffuser Blend Recipes
To use any of these blends in your home, you will need a cool mist essential oil diffuser (here and here). You can read more about essential oil diffuser types here.
This is the diffuser I use and love (pictured), which unfortunately is currently unavailable. It may be available depending on when you read this, so just click here to check.
You’ll find many beautiful cool mist diffusers here on Amazon or here at Rocky Mountain Oils!
You will also need essential oils. My favorite sources are Rocky Mountain Oils and Aroma Foundry. Both are high-quality, therapeutic grade, and affordable.
I gathered these recipes over the last couple years, some making up on the spot and some inspired by internet searches. Feel free to scale up or down depending on how many drops your diffuser recommends. Finally, play around with the amounts to make it smell just how you like it!

How Make Your Own Recipes Without Wasting Essential Oils!
Want to come up with your own blend recipes without wasting a ton of essential oils experimenting? It’s easy! Here are 2 ways to do it, the first of which uses no oils at all in testing.
- Open the essential oil bottles you’re considering combining. Hold them all together and smell just above the bottles to get an idea of how they all smell together. Don’t put your nose too close and kind of move your nose across so you blend the scents together. Hint: keep the lids lined up in the same order as the jars so they go back on the right jars — or make sure to label the top of each lid with stickers like this!.
- Put 1 drop of each essential oil you’re considering combining in the same area of a cloth or paper towel. Smell. Keep it handy to bring to your nose often and make use of the essential oils you put on there, therefore, no waste!
Easy-peasy! I can’t wait to hear about the blends you create!

Putting a pot of water to simmer on the stove with orange or apple peels, cinnamon sticks, cloves, or other spices is another great way to enjoy the aromas of the season! (Just don’t forget to turn it off before the water evaporates!)

My favorite is a blend that assists with warding off the Flu or colds. This is my version of the Thieves blend. It makes approx 6 ml. When I do my blend, I make 3 or 4 batches at the same time & store in a 1 oz bottle so it is ready when I need it. Thieves added to a water/vinegar mix is an excellent cleaner for counter tops, stove tops, etc. I use it all Winter in my diffuser & daily in my diffuser necklace.especially while Christmas shopping to help kill any germs that sick shoppers might be spreading. At the first sign of a cough or sore throat, I open the storage bottle & inhale deeply followed by using my room diffuser. I also add a few drops to a small wood clothes pin & clip to the air vents in my car. The ingredients are as follows. Smells best if blended in order given. To activate the blend of aromas, I run some warm tap water over the very bottom the the bottle…NOT warm or long enough to heat but just warm & long enough to kick in the blending.Overheating will ruin the blend…
03 drops Blood Orange or Sweet Orange essential oil
20 drops Cinnamon Bark essential oil
40 drops Clove Bud essential oil
30 drops Lemon essential oil
15 drops Eucalyptus Radiata essential oil
10 drops Spanish Rosemary essential oil
