Steaming, nourishing soup… it’s like a warm hug from the inside!
When I was a kid, I loved tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. To this day, that meal brings back such happy, nostalgic memories. I try to block out that it was store-bought canned soup now that I know more about traditional food preparation!
For this nourishing tomato basil soup, there’s no need to slave over the stove top if you have an Instant Pot! Just put your ingredients in, set it, and use the cooking time to make the rest of your meal.
If you still have fresh tomatoes from your garden, perfect! If not, home-canned tomatoes are just fine. Or, if you’re like me and throw your cherry tomatoes in the freezer to make juice later, toss some of those in, too.
Since this soup is a Trim Healthy Mama S (Satisfying) dish, be sure to keep your side dishes low-carb. Or if an S Helper or Crossover is okay for you, make yourself a grilled cheese! Because… nostalgia. 😉
I love to include a big, leafy green salad alongside my soup to get vital nutrients into my body and keep my immune system healthy.
Basil is a great source of vitamin K and manganese, as well as several other essential vitamins and minerals. With with mineral-rich bone broth, healthy traditional fats, and the natural vitamin C and lycopene in tomatoes, this healthy, nourishing soup is a great choice for fall and winter! My kids beg for it!
How To Get Silky Smooth Tomato Soup
Want a silky smooth tomato soup? You’ll need a high-powered blender. (I have a Vitamix knock-off from Aldi and love it.)
Simply wash and quarter your tomatoes (leave cherry tomatoes whole), toss them in the blender jar with a few cloves of fresh garlic, then puree for maybe a minute. Want a chunky soup? Pulse a few times until you achieve desired consistency.
This liquefied tomato goodness then mingles with rich bone broth, grass-fed butter, and cream in your Instant Pot. The result is the silkiest, smoothest tomato soup you’ve ever had. Remember that warm hug from the inside I mentioned above? Every single sip will leave you feeling warm and loved!
Instant Pot Tomato Basil Soup {nourishing & THM-friendly!}
With bone broth and vitamins, this Instant Pot Tomato Basil Soup is easy, quick, nourishing, and Trim Healthy Mama-friendly! Even the kids will beg for it!
Ingredients
- 4 cups tomato puree from approximately 4 large tomatoes
- 2 cloves garlic fresh
- 2 cups bone broth
- 1/4 cup grass-fed butter
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 1/2 cup fresh basil packed
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 to 2 pinches powdered stevia extract if desired
Instructions
-
Place tomatoes and garlic into high-powered blender.
-
Process on high for about 1 minute, or until completely pureed OR for a chunky style soup, pulse a few times to get desired consistency.
-
Pour tomato puree into insert pot of pressure cooker.
-
Add bone broth, butter, and salt.
-
Cover the pot, checking the seal and components to make sure all is well.
-
If using an electric cooker, such as an Instant Pot, set to high pressure for 20 minutes. If using a stove-top cooker, bring to high pressure and maintain for 20 minutes.
-
When cooking time is done, let depressurize naturally for 10 minutes, then place a towel over the venting knob and release the remaining pressure (or let sit until all pressure has naturally released).
-
Chop fresh basil finely then add to soup with cream. Using an immersion blender, give it a quick whirl. Alternatively, add cream and chopped basil to blender and pulse several times until the basil is in very small pieces. Stir into soup before serving.
-
If desired, add a bit of stevia or desired sweetener to cut the acidity of the tomatoes. Enjoy!

Fresh Basil Or Dried?
Fresh basil and tomatoes are a heavenly match! But if you don’t have fresh, you can easily substitute dried by remembering this one rule:
Use 1/3 less dry herb than fresh.
Add the dry basil into the Instant Pot for cooking, or if using fresh, add after cooking so it doesn’t become bitter. In the recipe above, add it with the heavy cream and give it a whirl with the immersion blender.
