"How do I make coconut kefir?” Watch or listen to learn about the 3 varieties of coconut kefir, and how to make them! | AskWardee.tv

“How do I make coconut kefir?” is the question on today’s #AskWardee. There are actually 3 varieties depending on what liquid and culture you choose. Do you know all 3?

I broadcast #AskWardee live each Wednesday at 10am Pacific (1pm Eastern) on Periscope and Facebook Live. Both the podcast and video replay of this week’s show are below. Enjoy!

The Question

Barbara R. asks:

“You mention in your book that someone can make coconut water kefir with milk kefir grains. Can you elaborate some more on it please? What are the quantities of ingredients, how many batches can I make with one set of milk kefir grains, etc. All that I should know about it.

I know that starter powder is more suited for that but I do have an abundance of milk kefir grains and using them for coconut water kefir seems like a good use of them. I think.

Would coconut water kefir made with milk kefir grains be as full of beneficial bacteria as a coconut water kefir made with the starter powder? Which version is healthier?”

I realize it wouldn’t be ideal to use the perma-pack unsweetened coconut milk, but can I try to make kefir with my dairy grains? Would you still get kefir? Since it’s unsweetened, should I add sweetener?
Thank you for all you do. Much appreciated 🙂

I am checking in from Alaska and we are definitely in winter with minus 20 degrees F. I just discovered this site from the Beyond Off The Grid webinar. I am really enjoying everything!!

I’ve been making coconut milk kefir for a few years now. I had previously used my kefir grains in goat milk but lost my supplier. I assumed I’d have to periodically put the grains back in regular milk for a while, but I haven’t needed to. I use Wilderness Family Naturals coconut milk powder, 1 1/3 cups powder to 3 cups water. Turns out great! I recommended it to a friend who was also thrilled with the result; nicer taste!
